Walk in ancient footsteps
by InsureandGo

Travel can take on an extra dimension for the history buff. Climbing a castle, wandering a battlefield, visiting a memorial: the past comes alive when you visit historical sites. Almost everywhere you visit has some rich history to explore, but some places do a better job than others of telling the stories of their past. For some amazing historical experiences, consider visiting one of these countries.

The joy of reading to children

by Margaret Hamilton AM

No doubt many who read the Seniors Card newsletter are grandparents. As someone who has worked with children and their books for over four decades, I’m writing to share with the grandparents among us, or even the aunts and uncles, the joy of reading to children. Sharing a book with a child, no matter what their age, is one of life’s greatest pleasures. Having their undivided attention for even a short time is invaluable for establishing a warm and loving relationship. How wonderful for you and your grandchild to share this precious time together, for reading a book together to become an eagerly awaited part of your time with them. Nothing can replace that very special feeling of togetherness. It’s a proven fact that children who are read to from an early age develop their literacy skills earlier and those in whom an early love of books and reading is instilled become readers for life. In this day of widespread technology and the ready availability of time-consuming devices, it is even more important that children are introduced to books at an early age. Children’s books are as essential to a child’s life as eating and sleeping.

AC-12’s Supt Hastings (Adrian Dunbar, Ashes to Ashes) places DS Kate Fleming (Vicky McClure, The Secret Agent) undercover inside Roz’s team to discover the truth. The Beatles First Five

9-10 September  - Sydney Opera House

January 1998, Sydney Opera House: I went backstage to meet the conductor. I looked him in the eye, shook his hand, and said the three words every Beatles fan would have liked to say to him: “Thanks for everything”.

The musician in question was the ‘fifth Beatle’, George Martin, and his autograph now adorns the shabby (‘much loved’) cover of my copy of Please Please Me – the group’s first album. For me there will never be another band like the Beatles because, for one thing, I grew-up with them: a child in ‘63, almost a man in 1970 when they broke-up; the experience is the same for many people.

Film review: Maudie (2017)

by CineMuseFilms

Maudie (2017) is the story of Canadian painter Maudie Lewis who became famous for her childlike art in early 1900s Nova Scotia.  This delightful film is full of slow visual and emotional delights that catch you unawares while you are waiting for the narrative to reveal a bigger story.

Yates® Seed of the Month

Yates Silverbeet ‘Perpetual Green’

If you want a long lasting source of healthy, home grown greens then Yates Silverbeet ‘Perpetual Green’ is for you.
Yates Silverbeet ‘Perpetual Green’ is an easy to grow, spinach-like silverbeet with smooth leaves and slim, green stalks. It can provide a prolific harvest of mild flavoured succulent leaves for more than a year (yes, more than a year!) and resists bolting to seed.

Yates Silverbeet ‘Perpetual Green’ does best in a full sun position in a well drained vegie patch or in a container filled with good quality potting mix like Yates Premium Potting Mix.

Yates® Product of the Month

Yates Liquid Copper Fungicide

Yates Liquid Copper Fungicide is an easy to use, versatile, broad spectrum fungicide that controls a wide range of diseases on both edible and ornamental plants.

Yates Liquid Copper Fungicide is an advanced liquid formulation that contains a form of copper called ‘copper ammonium complex’, which, unlike conventional copper powders is not made up of crystals. This means that Yates Liquid Copper Fungicide will give an even distribution of microscopic particles over the leaf surface, compared to uneven clumps of crystals from older powdered copper products, providing improved disease protection. Yates Liquid Copper Fungicide readily dilutes in water and forms a gel after mixing, which improves spray coverage and sticking properties and binds to the leaf surface when it dries.

What do you know about elder abuse?
You might have heard or read about “elder abuse” and thought that is something that happens to other people. However, the abuse and exploitation of older people is a hidden and highly sensitive issue that is not bound by social or cultural boundaries. Elder abuse takes many forms including physical, psychological or emotional, sexual and financial abuse. Abuse may also come about through neglect - intentional and unintentional - and as a consequence of ageism.
