Term deposits & other FIDO tips

ASIC recently released an investor and consumer guide on term deposits to help investors and consumers get the best out of their term deposits. Term deposits have experienced significant growth, with total term deposits in Authorised Deposit-taking Institutions (ADIs) growing by 39 per cent from June 2007 to September 2008. ASIC estimates that total term deposits in ADIs now exceed $500 billion. This makes them one of the most used investments by investors and consumers.

Centrelink: New allowances & financial services  

Communication allowance: As part of the Government’s Making Ends Meet package, the telephone allowance issued by Centrelink has been extended to include internet access. Those who qualify can now receive $33 per quarter, per household, to assist with the costs of maintaining a telephone and internet connection to their home. Centrelink also offers a host of seminars on financial services, ranging from: Planning for Retirement, Understanding Your Pension, Living in Retirement, Aged Care - fees and charges, and more.

Free Macular Degeneration screening  

The Vision Van screens people most at risk of Age Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) – men and women aged 50 and over. AMD is a major health problem facing Australia's ageing population, yet 36 per cent of the population are unaware of AMD and its effects. To help combat this, qualified optometrist Ms Li Chen, and her partner Paul, are driving the Vision Van along Australia’s eastern seaboard to provide free AMD screenings.

Link found between vision loss & red meat

A link has been found between eating too much red meat and vision loss. Researchers from the Royal Victorian Eye and Ear Hospital and the Centre for Eye Research Australia (CERA) have found an association between red meat consumption and an increased risk of early age related macular degeneration (AMD).

Bird watching club

Birding NSW (The NSW Field Ornithologists Club Inc) is a bird watching club which aims to share the joys of birding with others, as well as support the conservation of birds. The Club offers free introductory bird watching courses and a monthly schedule of activities, camp-outs, day outings and overseas trips. Monthly meetings, which include guest speakers and trip programmes, are held in Sydney and Tuggerah.
