Welcome to the first E-newsletter for 2009.

From Monday, 9th February at 9.00 am, tickets for the 2009 Premier's Seniors Week Gala Concerts can be booked through Ticketmaster, so don't forget to go online early for your free tickets. More details below or at www.nswseniorsweek.com.au.

Interstate transport concessions  

NSW Seniors Card holders can now access public transport concessions when travelling interstate as part of a new scheme funded by the Australian Government. For example, a NSW Seniors Card holder travelling to Melbourne is entitled to purchase public transport fares at the same concessional price as Victorian Seniors Card holders.

Seniors Week 15 - 22 March  

Each year, more than 700 events take place across metropolitan, regional and rural NSW to celebrate NSW Seniors Week. One of the most popular events is the Premier's Seniors Week Gala Concerts. This year's concert Black Piano White takes you on an odyssey from 1920’s cotton clubs and smoke filled bars, to 70’s glam rock and contemporary indie jazz clubs. The 2009 Seniors Week Gala Concerts offer a broad range of musical styles from the Jazz, Contemporary, Stride, Rock and Light classical repertoire.

Sydney Travel Xpo  

The world of travel will roll into Sydney for the annual Travel XPO, and what’s more – admission is FREE. Sydney patrons can experience all that the Expo has to offer for FREE by simply presenting a coupon which will appear daily in The Sydney Morning Herald and The Herald Sun from 2 March to 13 March 2009.

How walkable and wheelable is your community?  

The Ministerial Advisory Committee on Ageing (MACA) has developed a brief survey to identify how walkable and wheelable your community is. Please take the time to provide feedback on your local footpaths, and whether they are walkable, wheelable, safe and pleasant. The survey is anonymous, however you can choose to identify your local council.

Ku-ring-gai Garden Festival  

The annual Ku-ring-gai Garden Festival and growers' market is a community event co-hosted by the Rotary Club of Ku-ring-gai and Ku-ring-gai Council. Gardening clinics are available from TV personality Graham Ross, plus entertainment and over 100 stalls: plants, landscaping, water management, outdoor leisure, travel, craft, food and bargains galore!

The Council on the Ageing NSW Inc (COTA) is holding a series of Healthy Ageing Talks in Sydney and Picton. Topics include: Hear, Listen, Enjoy - discussion on hearing and listening devices, Prevent the Next Fracture, Healing the Spinal Cord, Chiropractic Principles, Quality Use of Medicines, Beyond Maturityblues and Maxim-eyes Your Sight.

RTA older driver licensing changes  

On 1 December 2008 the Roads Traffic Authority introduced changes to the driver licensing system for older drivers. There are four main changes affecting older drivers, 1) medical check-ups from 75 years, 2) practical driving assessments for drivers 85 years and older will take place every two years, 3) Older drivers have the option of taking a driving assessment from home, and 4) older drivers have the option of a modified licence.
