Welcome to another jam-packed issue of the Seniors Card EXTRA! newsletter. 

This month, we introduce a couple of new sections: - member stories, where you can read about interesting and inspiring things some of our members have done, and flashback to 60 years ago with a few facts and a bit of trivia!

Veggies to sow in February

Summer might be coming to an end but February’s often the hottest month in the garden.   Water with care – preferably in the early morning – and enjoy this month of maximum growth.

Spring onions are easy vegetables and, with their slightly grey leaves, they’re attractive enough to be interspersed among the ornamentals in the garden.   Start your spring onions in the protective shade of low growing plants and allow them to grow up into the full sun.

Dahlias, with their brightly coloured flowers, are mainstays of the late summer and autumn garden. 

For many years dahlias seemed to be the preserve of dedicated breeders and growers who were committed to developing perfect exhibition flowers that were often so top heavy they had to be supported by unattractive stakes.

Recently, though, we’ve rediscovered the delights of single-flowered dahlias and these plants have regained their rightful place in the easy-care garden.

Volunteers needed - UNSW and Neuroscience Research Australia

The Falls and Balance Research Group at Neuroscience Research Australia together with the University of New South Wales, in Randwick, are currently conducting a large research study to investigate the causes of dizziness and assess the effectiveness of a tailored treatment plan in people aged 50 years and over.

Take stock of your finances

International superstar Leo Sayer has been announced as the special guest performer for the upcoming Premier’s Gala Concerts. 

Free for NSW Seniors, the concerts will be held at Qantas Credit Union Arena (Sydney Entertainment Centre) on Tuesday 18 March (4.30pm), Wednesday 19 March (10.30am and 2.30pm) and Thursday 20 March (10.30am).

Sue Field, NSW Trustee & Guardian Fellow in Elder Law at University of Western Sydney, will explain the use and benefits of a Will, Power of Attorney, Enduring Guardian and Advance Care Plans. NSWTG will discuss what happens when someone doesn’t have a Power or Attorney or dies without a Will. Public Guardian staff will explain appointing a guardian and the term Person Responsible.
